Bachelor of Economics (Monash University)
Professional Member: Supply Chain and Logistics Association of Australia
Numerous Executive Development programs
Presented Supply Chain papers across South East Asia

Matthew is a senior supply chain and logistics practitioner with 20 years experience across the Asia Pacific in leading supply chain consultancies, including Arthur Andersen, Symonds Henderson and Sinclair Knight Merz.

His Fourth Party Logistics (4PL) experience over the past 10 years with Vector SCM (JV with General Motors) and Active Supply Chains makes him one of the regions leading authorities on 4PL and Managed Logistics Services.

His consulting experience is primarily in analysing, designing and implementing supply chains in the automotive and retail industries. These projects have required Matthew to develop detailed business cases justifying significant and challenging change management, then to ‘sell’ this change throughout the organisation.

International experience in Asia, in which he was the manager of a start-up supply chain consultancy, has also given Matthew a deep understanding of the complexities of global supply chain management.

Amongst recent projects, Matthew has:

  • Acted as the Commercial lead in the development of a Managed Transport Solution for Ford Australia aftermarket spares, which has achieved cost reductions and service level improvements.
  • Managed the consolidation of logistics resulting from a merger between two parties in the dairy industry.
  • Previously led several supply chain projects for an international airline.
  • Led a national warehouse outsourcing evaluation for the Australian operation of a global industry icon, including the development of leading edge warehouse technology solutions.
  • Led a national distribution review for a leading automotive player, which identified several cost reduction and service enhancement opportunities.
  • Developed cost saving initiatives for an Australian textile manufacturer which reduced transport costs by >10%.

Master of Business Administration (University of Cape Town)
Higher Diploma in Taxation (University of the Witwatersrand) (post-grad)

Richard was a barrister who entered the South African corporate environment. In the decade before moving to Australia, he headed the legal function of one of South Africa’s largest, diversified listed groups and was a senior executive of the group’s management team. He became increasingly involved in the strategic, tactical and financial management of merger and acquisition processes and in joint venture operations.

He was a co-founder of SMG in South Africa, which he and a small internal team subsequently brought to a successful stock exchange listing as DNA. He was the founding local member of SMG in Australia and, in turn, of Active. His involvement with supply chain businesses goes back almost thirty years.

In Australia over the last fourteen years, Richard has advised established clients on commercial strategies and structural and financing plans. He has also been involved in the recognition, analysis, planning, management and development of new businesses. He has been responsible for conceiving, starting and developing operations in Sydney, Melbourne and Perth. He now directs Sydney and Melbourne companies. He continues to have entrepreneurial involvement in the South African business environment too. There he was a co-founder of the Quorum Network which transformed into the international Onyx Ventures which has indirect interests in our group.

Stephen Conradie

Key Executives – Stephen Conradie

Bachelor of Law (University of Rhodesia); Bachelor of Laws (University of Rhodesia) (post-grad)
Master of Business Administration (University of Cape Town)

A visionary who sees concepts and brings them into being, Steve has for over thirty years been one of South Africa’s industry-leading specialists in the logistics and supply chain arenas. Successful business builds were of XPS (mid-80s) and of SMG (mid-90s) – the latter becoming the lead party in the JSE listing, DNA Supply Chains. Both XPS and SMG were built by the relationship-driven, hands-on efforts of their few founders – Steve at the forefront. His last role in the listed DNA was as its Executive Chairman.

A doyen of the supply chain game in South Africa, Steve has also had a long-seen vision of involvement beyond South Africa’s borders. Activities towards this vision included the founding in October 1998 of a subsidiary of SMG in Australia and the establishment in January 2002 of DNA Supply Chains Asia Pacific, which later became the independently-owned Active Supply Chains.

The outsourced, or perhaps better called “co-sourced”, business model of supply chain strategic and operational management which Steve pioneered in South Africa is the model that forms the base of that employed by Active in Australia.

A buy-out of DNA in South Africa led to Steve’s return to entrepreneurial endeavour early in 2004. As the conceiver of the Quorum group and its successor, Onyx Ventures, Steve has had strategic, investment management roles and also roles involving hands-on, operational effort. Onyx Ventures has invested in Nucleus and Active.
